Get Unstuck in 5 Days – Day 1

Day 1: Take Inventory

Do you feel stuck? Overwhelmed? Lost? Confused? Exhausted? Do you desire more from life, but feel helpless in what to do next? Do you feel like you are reacting to life instead of directing your own life?

When I begin to find myself feeling this way, or more specifically find myself feeling very scattered brain, or feel like my thoughts are all over the place, or feel like I’m beginning to procrastinate work, this is a huge indicator to me that I need to pause and spend time taking inventory of what I’m feeling.

The first step to getting unstuck in life is to write down what you are feeling. If you’ve never considered how you are feeling before this may feel unnatural or difficult to do and that’s okay! Emotional awareness is a muscle that has to be built up and strengthened over time.

Use a wheel of emotion (google search “wheel of emotion”) to help you discover what you are feeling. Look through the wheel and pick a couple of the emotions that stick out or resonate with you.

Write these emotions down somewhere either in a journal, on a scrap piece of paper, or even on a sticky note. This is an important step! Don’t skip this process! The act of pausing and physically writing down our feelings will disrupt the chaos going on in our mind and begin to bring a sense of calm to our mind.

The last step is to simply let these feelings be. I say simply but this can be a very difficult part of the process. You may feel uncomfortable by what you are feeling and have a strong urge to escape these feelings. Or you may have a “fix it” personality and feel like these feelings are “wrong” and need to be fixed. But, it is important to simply acknowledge to yourself that this is how you are feeling in this moment and remind yourself that nothing has gone wrong and you’re not wrong for feeling this way.

The greatest gift we can give ourselves is the freedom to allow ourselves to feel what we are feeling. Emotions are neither bad nor good. They are the natural response to what is happening in our life and the Lord has created us to fully experience our lives. Your body and mind are naturally going to feel something based off what is happening in your life and you have the choice to ignore those feelings or choose to embrace and acknowledge your feelings.

So my challenge to you today is to physically write down one or two emotions you are feeling, acknowledge to yourself you are feeling this way, and then just let yourself allow those feelings to exist with you today. I promise you if you do this one simple step that you’ll begin to feel a small bit of relief and power to begin taking control of your life.
